Mt. Hood Race Team & Academy

Mt. Hood Academy

MHRTA operates Mt. Hood Academy (MHA) to help students establish and achieve athletic goals while still balancing educational demands. MHA seeks to provide an environment fostering intellectual and physical pursuits through a series of well-rounded programs including full-time ski training and racing, a live-in Winter academy, sports psychology classes, equipment management and nutrition education.

Attendance at MHA's accredited school is not required to participate with the MHRTA Elite Team, however, training and racing are closely coordinated with the Academy's academic schedule. These full-time athletes move into the Academy Haus mid-November and continue training through April. MHA maintains flexibility and individuality in class schedules to ensure quality education through athletic competitions, training and travel.

Academy Academics - Mt. Hood Academy is a 7-12 grade private school accredited through AdvancED. We strive for academic excellence while maintaining the flexibility necessary for high-level ski racing and training.  We operate a model that utilizes on-line curriculum so athletes can complete work at their own pace and around their individual race schedules.  The on-line program uses the latest in curriculum technology to create a learning environment that supports all types of student learners.  In addition, at home the on-line curriculum is supplemented with face-to-face and one-on-one teacher and tutor support to ensure that athletes maintain grades, stay up to speed on their work and learn.

We operate a winter term program where athletes can exit their regular school and join Mt. Hood Academy in mid-November and return to their home school after championship season at the end of April.  We find this schedule allows student-athletes the support and flexibility they need during the intense winter racing and training schedule.

In addition to standard school curriculum, Academy Student-Athletes receive supplemental instruction in nutrition, sports psychology, avalanche awareness, cooking, time-management & organization.

Academy Haus - The Academy Haus can sleep up to 14 boys and 14 girls for short-term training camps and other events, however the Haus is limited to 7 full-time girls and 7 full-time boys to allow plenty of living and storage space for the athletes who call the Academy Haus their home.

The Academy Haus includes a full commercial kitchen where Academy kids have the opportunity to hone their cooking and cleaning skills. Students and staff work together to provide nutritious meals and snacks to fuel growing athletes.  We include cooking and nutrition as a part of the Academy curriculum, and often times you can see students practicing fractions and math as they prepare meals and snack for the entire Haus.

The Academy Haus includes a fully equipped conditioning facility for year-round fitness and weight training under the watchful eye of experienced strength and conditioning coaches.  All athletes participate in a Functional Movement Screening (FMS) prior to working out at the Academy Haus. Every athlete is coached and tested on proficiency in Olympic Lifting as a part of the MHA conditioning program.

A heated, indoor ski-tuning room is available at the Academy Haus for all academy athletes. Student-Athletes are taught ski-tuning and waxing techniques by expert ski technicians and coaches are available for assistance in tuning as needed.

Academy Ski Training - The typical schedule at MHA includes a full day of school on Mondays and Tuesdays with teachers available for one-on-one tutoring.  Wednesday and Thursday includes a.m. ski training and p.m. school.  Fridays offer a full-day of ski training for all athletes who are current in their school program.  Saturday and Sunday are dedicated fully to ski-training. The Academy Team trains primarily at Mt. Hood Ski Bowl (walking distance from the Academy Haus) where resort staff work closely with MHRTA staff to arrange, plan and prepare the best training venues on Mt. Hood.  In addition, Mt. Hood Ski Bowl is the only Mt. Hood resort to provide private a.m. training for a local race team.  MHA also has the option to train at Timberline Ski Area when conditions and/or training venues necessitate.

Our coaches use the most advanced technology to provide our athletes with the tools they need for success.  We utilize on-hill video review, electronic, chip-based timing and big screen video analysis for lunch or break time review in the team room at the base of Mt. Hood Ski Bowl.

Summer Programs  While Mt. Hood Academy is a winter-term school, our program doesn't end there.  Our backyard (Timberline) is the premiere US Summer Ski Training destination and we take full advantage to ensure our athletes have access to year-round training.  Spring training continues for Academy athletes at Timberline through weekends in the month of May and summer camps begin in June.  While other teams are traveling to Timberline for expensive commercial camps, MHA continues our private Team Summer Series camps in our own backyard through alternating weeks in July and August ensuring that our athletes retain skiing muscle memory year-round while still allowing for some great, summer fun.
